Faculty Bio
Dr. Allison Mader
Assistant Professor, English
Dr. Allison Mader, a 21st century literature specialist, has been teaching with us since 2014. Her academic journey began at another strong liberal arts institution, Mount Allison University, prior to moving to Calgary—which she calls home—to complete her MA and PhD at the University of Calgary. Though her research focus is Postcolonial literature and theory, Dr. Mader has an impressive breadth and depth of knowledge across the field of English literature. Dr. Mader is particularly interested in issues of power, privilege, and positionality—clear evidence of her alignment with St. Mary’s commitment to social justice. She has already taught a wide variety of courses for us to students’ great appreciation: in one year alone, Dr. Mader was mentioned 8 times in the StMU Cares Survey for being a generous mentor. She will continue to captivate students as she teaches more of our calendared courses, later American literature, for example; at the same time, Dr. Mader looks ahead to developing new offerings in graphic narratives and women’s literature, to name just two. She is eager to shape the future of the program with her colleagues and to contribute to every facet of the St. Mary’s experience as is possible only through a tenure-track position. Dr. Mader deeply understands the discipline’s importance within the Liberal Arts at a Catholic University and her love for literature and empathy for others is infectious.
